Housatonic Community College Offers Saturday STEAM Activities for Grades 2 – 10

By

Continuing the very popular summer STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) activities for children in grades 2 through the 2nd year of high school, HCC will conduct Saturday Academy beginning on October 15.  Parents or guardians can register their students for the Academy on Saturday, Oct. 8 in HCC’s Lafayette Hall, room C235 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Saturday Academy takes place in two locations; HCC and at the Bridgeport Public Library on Madison Ave. The two locations accommodate students from different areas in the city. The same programs will be offered in both places.

The Academy fee is $45 each session and payment plans are available. Saturday Academy is run in conjunction with the Bridgeport Organization for Youth Sports. The students will participate in academic and life-long learning activities at HCC or the Madison Ave. Library from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and then proceed to sports activities organized by the Organization for Youth Sports. Engaging in community service is also part of the program.

Children will participate in STEAM-related activities with HCC instructors and trained college student supervision. They will work on many different projects including building models, creating art, exploring areas of technology as well as basic learning skills which can last a life-time. HCC Professor Robin Avant says, “Mostly this is a fun-filled, hands-on opportunity for kids to experience the exciting the areas of STEAM. We had terrific summer camp sessions and look forward to Saturday Academy being a positive and happy experience for the children.”

For further information, call Robin Avant, 203-332-5984 or Shawn Byrd, 203-535-4829.
