The Connecticut Association for the Gifted(CAG) and the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center at Housatonic Community College (HCC) are partnering to host the popular Minds In Motion™ workshop series. The event will be held at HCC on Saturday, December 3 from 12-4pm.
Minds in Motion™ events are designed to enrich and encourage curious (not necessarily gifted) students. Each event offers exciting, fast-paced workshops for students, normally in Grades K-8. For the first time, high school students will also be able to participate, primarily in workshops offered by the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center at HCC.
Examples of workshops offered for high school students are: ‘The Amazing Human Skeletal System’, ‘Solar Energy and Arrays’, ‘Bacterial Fingerprints!’ and ‘Chain Reaction!’ where the students will design and engineer a Rube Goldberg machine.
Examples of workshops offered for Grades K-8 include ‘Engineering with LEGO®’ by Play-Well TEKnologies, ‘Knots and Survival in Nature’ by Cub Scouts Pack 126, ‘Math Jeopardy’ by a Staples High School advanced math student, ‘Fun with Improv’ by SeaTea Improv in Hartford, ‘How to be an Entrepreneur!’ by Junior Achievement Western CT, ‘Game On!’ by the Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden, as well as ‘The Amazing Human Skeletal System’ and ‘Solar Energy and Arrays’ workshops for Grades 6-8.
The Keynote Address by Bill Derry, former Director of Innovation at the Westport Public Library, is ‘Learning through Play and Imagination’. The adult workshops will provide parents with thought-provoking, special-interest workshops, free of charge. Minds in Motion™ also affords the opportunity to network with fellow parents and learn about resources, after-school programs, camps, books, and other educational tools beneficial for every child.
The brochure with all the workshop choices and online registration can be found on the CAG website at www.ctgifted.org. The cost for Bridgeport students is $10, $5 for siblings. For non-Bridgeport students, the CAG member rate is $20 per child, and for non-members $25 per child for the whole afternoon. Financial aid is available upon request. The registration deadline is November 30. Space is limited, classes are assigned on a first-come, first served basis and they fill up fast.
