Housatonic Community College (HCC) will host “Forming a More Perfect Union” a conversation on civic engagement presented by Tanya A. Hughes, Executive Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities (CHRO). The event is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 17 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Beacon Hall Events Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Since her appointment as Executive Director, Hughes has been an active member on the Connecticut Racial Profiling Prohibition Project, leading to CHRO’s inclusion on the notification slip issued to drivers during a traffic stop. Hughes handles complaints of discrimination in employment and housing in regard to race, gender, religion, national original, sexual orientation and immigration status among others.
“We are leveraging every opportunity available to engage our students in conversation around civic engagement, social justice and mobilization.” Dr. Kelly K. Hope, Director of Student Life said. “Mrs. Hughes has more than 20 years of experience working for the residents of Connecticut as an advocate for civil and human rights. Forming a More Perfect Union is one of many planned events that will take place surrounding civic engagement this semester.”
“Forming a More Perfect Union” will feature on-site voter registration as well as information on where to vote.
