HCC Celebrates Black History Month Featured

In celebration of Black History and Culture various offices on our campus planned and created a series of programs to uplift, educate, and encourage dialog between faculty, students, staff, and the greater Bridgeport community. The calendar of events is embedded and attached to this e-mail. Faculty are encouraged to bring your classes to the events!

The kickoff event: MAAFA: "Shaking the Tree: Thriving in American Soil"

Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 6:30pm in the Performing Arts Center.

Free and open to The HCC Community and Public
Background Information: MAAFA is a psycho-drama theatrical production.  


 

Social Justice Chat and Chew: Blacks in Higher Education

Facilitated by Mr. Terry Walden on Monday, February 8, 12:00pm in Beacon Hall Room 315.

Background Information: The Social Justice Chat and Chew is designed to foster dialogue between students, faculty, and staff.


 

A Look at the Life of Writer James Baldwin

Facilitated by Professors Edwena Chance, Susan Monroe, and Rob Nelson on Thursday, February 11 at 1:00pm in the Events Center.

Free and open to The HCC Community and Public. Light Refreshments will be provided.
Background Information: This session will examine the life and influence of writer James Baldwin.


 

The African Origins of Civilization

Facilitated by Jabari Osaze on Tuesday, February 16, 3:30pm in Beacon Hall Room 315.

Background Information: This interactive session will discuss the origins of civilization and the contributions of Blacks in society.


 

Black in Latin America: A screening and discussion with Professor Saulo Colon

Background Information: This program will discuss what it means to be Black in Latin America.


 

The HCC Women's Center presents.. Zora Neale Hurston: The Life of an Anthropologist

Shades of Beauty: Exploring the Stratum

Facilitated by: Kelly K. Hope on Thursday, February 18 at 12:45pm in the  Events Center.

Free and open to The HCC Community. Light Refreshments will be provided.
Background Information: This program will examine how beauty is defined in the black community.


 

The Writer's Clique Collection: An evening with HCC Student & Playwright Lisa McCree

The culmination event: The Ministry of Music Featuring Renown Guitarist Jonathan DuBose Jr.  

Monday, February 29 at 6:30pm  in the Events Center.

Free and open to The HCC Community and Public

Light Refreshments will be provided.
Background Information: The culmination event will celebrate Gospel music and liturgical dance. Area choirs and dancers have been invited to share their gifts through song.
