Connecticut NAACP Names President Broadie Among 2018's Most Influential

The Connecticut National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) named Paul Broadie II, Ph.D. among the100 Most Influential Blacks in Connecticut for 2018. 

Dr. Broadie is the President of Housatonic Community College (HCC) in Bridgeport and Gateway Community College (GCC) in New Haven, and among the first in Connecticut selected to preside over two colleges.  He was appointed President of Housatonic Community College (HCC) in Bridgeport in 2015, and the Connecticut Board of Regents for Higher Education expanded his duties when they appointed him president of Gateway Community College (GCC) in New Haven in 2017.  

As president of two Connecticut community colleges, President Broadie places a keen focus on ensuring that both GCC and HCC serve as a resource and educational engine for their respective communities. He works tirelessly to address the educational, workforce development and personal enrichment needs of the region and collaborates closely with area universities to forge pathways for continued study. 

“I am honored that the NAACP has included me in this prestigious distinction,” said President Broadie. “Recognizing that the most important qualities of leadership include the ability to listen and to respond with the necessary tools and resources to encourage individual and institutional success, I hope to draw attention to the importance of access to higher education for all who seek advancement and an enhanced quality of life.”

President Broadie’s comprehensive background in Academic Affairs, Student Services, and Continuing Education enforces his commitment to placing the needs of the student at the heart of the institutional mission.   He places a keen focus on ensuring that both GCC and HCC serve as a resource and educational engine for their respective communities. 

Over the past twenty-six years, President Broadie’s career in leadership has been defined by the expansion of academic programs, student services, innovative technology, community partnerships and campus expansion. This includes the 46,000 square foot addition of Lafayette Hall at Housatonic Community College. Under his leadership, Housatonic Community College was selected by the Aspen Institute as one of the top 150 community colleges in the nation for excellence, high achievement, and performance. HCC was also named an Achieving the Dream Leader Institution, and Gateway Community College was accepted into the ranks of an Achieving the Dream institution.

Dr. Broadie holds a Ph.D. from Colorado State University, an M.B.A. from Long Island University and a B.S. in Business Administration from Mercy College. He serves on several Boards including; Central Connecticut Coast YMCA, International Festival of Arts and Ideas, Workforce Development Alliance, New Haven Promise, the Bridgeport Higher Education Alliance, Bridgeport Public Education Fund, Bridgeport Regional Business Council, Phi Theta Kappa National President’s Advisory Board, the United Way of Fairfield Coastal County, The WorkPlace, Inc., Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders (BCYL) and The Kennedy Center.  He is a member of the New Haven Chamber of Commerce Regional Leadership Council, Jobs for the Future Policy Council, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and American College Personnel Association, as well as a proud member of the Delta-Mu-Delta National Business Honor Society, Alpha Chi National Honor Society and Psi Kappa Psi Honor Society.
