Housatonic Museum of Art to Launch Exciting Three-Part Artist Speaker Series

The Housatonic Museum of Art (HMA), home to one of the premier college art collections in the country, is proud to announce an exciting new Spring Artist Speaker Series. The events present rising artists and distinguished arts professionals sure to arouse thought-provoking discussion and artistic inspiration.

Over delicious appetizers and prosecco, visitors will enjoy an immersive experience that expands understanding of visual art. Tickets for each event are $50 and include hand-crafted appetizers, drinks, free parking, and lively conversation. The series, which takes place on the Housatonic Community College (HCC) campus, supports educational programs and special exhibitions that the HMA offers to students, faculty and staff, and greater community. “I have had the pleasure of getting to know Manon, Cheryl, and Eric both during my directorship at the Housatonic Museum of Art, and over my years at the Yale Center for British Art. I am thrilled to welcome these three incredible thought-leaders and artists to our community of HMA supporters and excited for the conversations this spring.” – Jennifer Reynolds-Kaye, Ph.D., Director of the Housatonic Museum of Art.

The series will launch on Tuesday, March 28, at 5:30pm in the Elizabeth Fray Galleries in Beacon Hall with emerging art historian Manon Gaudet presenting Making Sovereignty: Native American Tourist Art. Gaudet, a Ph.D. candidate at Yale University, will discuss the collection of Native North American artworks and belongings currently on view in the gallery. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how Indigenous artists interacted with a market for Native American goods in the nineteenth century and the significance of making art as an act of sovereignty.

The series continues on Wednesday, April 12 with award-winning graphic designer Dr. Cheryl D. Miller, who will exhibit her private collection of paintings and discuss her story of a life’s event that rechanneled her path of fine art painting to a revered professional design career. The event, Painting By Design, will take place at 5:30pm in the Performing Arts Center in Lafayette Hall.

The final event in the series presents an interactive drawing experience. On Tuesday, May 2, Sketching in the Sculpture Garden features painter and draftsman Eric March. Alongside this New-Haven-based artist, attendees will take inspiration from the College’s permanent sculpture installation to create their own compositions. The engaging evening begins at 5:30pm in the HCC Courtyard.
