HCC Hosts Community Reception To Celebrate New Artwork

The community is invited to attend a special dedication and reception to celebrate the installation of a new, stunning piece of artwork installed in the newly expanded atrium of Housatonic Community College (HCC). The event will take place on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 12:30pm in Lafayette Hall at 900 Lafayette Blvd., Bridgeport, CT.

The site-specific artwork was created by New Hampshire sculptor, Soo Sunny Park. Entitled Flight of Luminescence, the piece is comprised of stainless-steel mesh and dichroic glass. The work captures varying lights and changes spatial experience throughout the day. Light’s reflection explodes in all directions, splashing the walls, floors and ceiling with glistening shades of purple, pink, green and yellow. Throughout the day, the sculpture can be seen by motorists and passers-by through the exterior glass wall.

Commissioned by the Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) and Department of Administration Services (DAS), the work is part of their Art in Public Spaces Program, whereby 1% of the construction budget for public buildings is dedicated to the acquisition of important works of art for the enjoyment of the staff, faculty, students and visitors to the campus.

“We are thrilled to have this important new commission join the Housatonic Museum of Art’s landmark collection,” said Dr. Thomas Coley, HCC Acting President. “This enchanting piece stirs creativity, exploration, and discussion, aligning perfectly with HCC’s ideals.”

The Housatonic Museum of Art is located on the Housatonic Community College campus, 900 Lafayette Blvd. in Bridgeport, CT.
